Hutchinson News: Harper County man sentenced for child sex crimes

ANTHONY – A Harper County man was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison on Tuesday for convictions on three child sex crimes, the Kansas Attorney General’s office reported.

Jason Maynard Spooner, 56, of Bluff City, was sentenced by Harper County District Court Judge Gaten Wood to 167 months in a Kansas Department of Corrections facility.

Wood also sentenced Spooner to lifetime registration as a sex offender and lifetime post-release supervision.

Spooner pleaded no contest on July 23 to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and one count of indecent liberties with a child.

He was originally charged with more than a dozen counts in the case, including another count of indecent liberties, multiple counts of felony endangering a child, contributing to a child’s misconduct and domestic battery, according to court files.

The crimes took place in March 2019 in Harper County and involved the sexual fondling of a 14-year-old, court records indicate. The case was investigated by the Harper County Sheriff’s Office, the Anthony Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Adam Zentner of Schmidt’s office and Harper County Attorney Richard Raleigh.
